The following information is designed to prepare you for your Alpine Walk experience in the Rocky Mountains. You will be flying to an Alpine Meadow on Charles Stuart Mountain just north of the Trans Canada (Highway 1) in Canmore.

Who are the guides?
Alpine Helicopters heli hike program has utilized guides provided by White Mountain Adventures for many years. The company has gained an excellent reputation for safety, innovative programming and for the expertise of its guides.

White Mountain Adventures has two priorities on these heli hikes: to ensure the safety of their guests in the mountains and around the aircraft, and to enhance their experience of the mountains by providing accurate, detailed information on the natural world. As individuals, they work, play and live in this area and have been chosen by White Mountain Adventures for their local knowledge and particularly for their ability to communicate effectively with their guests.

As highly trained naturalists and interpreters, White Mountain Adventures' guides will assist in delivering an experience unlike any other.

When to go Heli Hiking?
Heli hiking tours in the Canadian Rockies are generally offered from June to the end of September. Daytime temperatures range from 50'F to 85'F; however, it can snow at any time of the year!

Level of Hiking
You will be able to customize your heli-hike to your level of ability. When making your reservation be sure to indicate what type of hike you are interested in. There are 3 choices:

Easy: Guests must be prepared to walk over relatively flat terrain for 1-2 km's with virtually no elevation gain

Moderate: Guests must be prepared to walk over slightly longer distances (2- 4km). This hike will largely remain in the bowl at Charles Stewart, however may have slightly elevation gains

Challenging: Guests must be able to hike over uneven terrain for approximately 5-8km that will have elevation gain associated with it. Guests should be in sound physical health; they should not suffer from any knee, hip, ankle or joint injuries.

What to bring?

  • a daypack
  • snacks / lunch
  • sturdy walking shoes**
  • hat / sunglasses
  • sunscreen
  • lots of water (at least one water bottle per person)

What to Wear
The mountain environment is tough to plan for the weather changes quickly and often. On your hike you may encounter sunny skies, rain showers, wind and/or a rapid change in temperature. The best thing to do is to dress in layers so you can shed clothing or add a layer as needed.

We suggest you wear and/or bring:

  • T-shirt / short sleeved shirt
  • Shorts
  • Rainproof jacket
  • Long pants to go over shorts
  • Fleece / sweatshirt / sweater

** We do have a selection of hiking boots, windpants, jackets and sweaters available at the heliport if you need to borrow anything (or if you forget to pack something). You should not have to go out and buy anything special for your heli hike.

Lunch
There is also a lunch option available. Lunches can be ordered at the time of booking or anytime up to 48 hours prior to your hike.

It's a good idea to call us here at the heliport on the day of your flight to ensure we are flying all trips that day. In the event of inclement weather we will be happy to reschedule your hike to another date. Please feel free to call us at (403) 678-4802 should you have any further questions about your Alpine Walk.
